December DSLR User Magazine Projects

As some of you may know, I am a regular writer for DSLR User magazine. Though I normally keep the articles to the confines of the magazine itself, on some occasions I like to share things. Here's a couple of recent projects, from a collection of four in total. First up I was asked to photograph a mundane, everyday object from the home - possibly from the kitchen. So....after much angst I chose the lowly salt mill, (or grinder to some of us). Armed with a small fold-out table, I photographed the object in the bathroom, since the kitchen was in use. Lit with only a small key fob light through various colour gels, plus a laser pointer, here's the results. For the photographers out there, I used a Nikon D700 with a 60mm macro lens...

This was the basic setup, all ready to go...

With the camera set to shoot 30-second exposures, in a blacked out room (hence my bathroom on this occasion), I had chance to 'paint' the salt grinder with light from the key fob torches...adding gels to create colourful streaks to the image.

This article, plus how it was made is in the current January issue of the magazine...
...for the next issue (February), I chose a simple clock from the bathroom, and went all pop-art with it...

For the photographers out there, the clock was simply placed on a piece of pink card, lit with three wireless flashguns, and photographed with a Nikon D700 camera with either a 60mm macro or 24mm prime lens...

To create the look, well....you'll have to buy February's issue, on sale 8th January!
